Trump says Netanyahu, Aoun could meet in US within three weeks
US President Donald Trump has announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun could travel to the United States for a meeting within the next three weeks.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump confirmed that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to extend their ceasefire for another three weeks, stressing that the sides have a strong chance of reaching a peace agreement in 2026, Caliber.Az reports.
“We're going to be working with Lebanon to get things straightened out in that country. I really believe it's something we can do pretty easily just with the power of who we are,” he noted.
Trump also said that a “top secret” cargo was found aboard an Iranian vessel intercepted by the United States while en route from China.
The US president further reiterated his intention to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, even if such efforts were to drive oil prices up to $200 per barrel.
Asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would be invited to a G20 summit in Miami, Trump responded negatively, however, noting that “if he came, it would be probably very helpful.”
He made it clear that throwing Russia out of the G8 was wrong.
“I've said a long time ago when they made the G8, the G7, they threw Russia out before my time. … I said that that's a stupid thing to do. … when they threw out President Putin, he was very offended by that. … I venture to say, you probably wouldn't be having these problems if you didn't throw him out,” he added.
