Trump thanks Georgian PM for Independence Day congratulations
US President Donald Trump has thanked Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze for congratulating the United States on the 250th anniversary of its independence in an unexpected exchange of letters.
The Georgian government administration has revealed the correspondence between Tbilisi and Washington, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Until now, the Georgian prime minister's congratulatory message had not been made public.
In his letter, Trump highlighted the importance of Independence Day as a celebration of freedom, resilience and the "indomitable spirit" of the American people, while also addressing the future of bilateral relations, which have faced difficulties in recent years.
The US president expressed confidence that Washington and Tbilisi would be able to move forward despite existing challenges.
"We are proud of the principles that have guided our country throughout its history and deeply value the friendship of partners who share respect for these ideals. ... I look forward to strengthening our cooperation so that together we can advance toward a safer, more prosperous and peaceful future in support of the sovereignty, security and long-term prosperity of our countries," the Georgian government administration quoted Trump as saying.
The United States marked Independence Day on July 4.
Neither Kobakhidze's press office nor the Georgian government administration disclosed at the time that congratulations had been sent to the White House, and the text of the Georgian prime minister's letter has yet to be published.
Earlier in Trump's second term, both Kobakhidze and Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili sent letters to the U.S. president calling for the restoration of strategic partnership relations "from a clean slate." Those messages went unanswered in Washington.
