Trump eyes another World Cup in America — without Canada, Mexico
President Donald Trump has expressed such satisfaction with the ongoing World Cup that he is already calling for the United States to host the tournament again — this time without sharing hosting duties with Canada and Mexico.
Speaking at a FIFA World Cup reception ahead of the July 19 final between Spain and Argentina, Trump encouraged the governing body to bring football’s biggest event back to the United States, according to POLITICO.
“You should choose the United States of America again,” the president said during the reception at Trump Tower in New York. “This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out.”
He went on to suggest that FIFA should “pick somebody else for the next one and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone.”
Trump also disclosed that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had floated the idea of a joint World Cup hosted by the United States and China, joking that teams would “have a nice short flight in between games.”
The next men’s World Cup open for bidding is the 2038 edition.
FIFA has already allocated the 2030 tournament to a six-nation hosting format involving Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will stage the opening matches as part of celebrations marking the competition’s centenary. Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 World Cup.
The bidding race for 2038 is expected to begin well in advance, with strong interest likely despite Trump’s apparent effort to persuade FIFA. Under current rotation rules, regions that have hosted recently are ineligible, while countries from North America and Oceania will be free to submit bids for the tournament.
