Türkiye detains ISIS terrorist behind Santa Maria Church attack
In a significant operation, the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) has detained Vishan Soltamatov, a prominent ISIS operative implicated in the January 28, 2024, attack on the Church of Santa Maria in Istanbul.
Soltamatov, identified as one of the main organizers of the assault, was apprehended in Istanbul and was found in possession of the weapons used during the attack, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
Soltamatov’s arrest has yielded crucial intelligence regarding ISIS’s operational strategies. The detainee provided valuable insights into the planning and execution of the attack on the Church of Santa Maria, as well as detailed information about ISIS's recruitment processes, financial operations, and logistical support from the Khorasan province.
The operation by MİT also uncovered significant developments regarding ISIS's broader plans. The intelligence gathered led to the prevention of potential attacks against synagogues and churches in Türkiye, as well as the Iraqi Embassy in December 2023. This proactive approach resulted in the capture of several suspects, the confiscation of digital materials linked to ISIS, and the disruption of the group’s planned operations within Türkiye.
The attack on the Church of Santa Maria, carried out by two gunmen during the morning mass on January 28, 2024, turned a routine service into a scene of terror. The assault resulted in the death of one individual. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for this violent act, which has been described as an attempt to instil fear and chaos in the community.
