Abbas Araghchi in Rome for critical round of US-Iran nuclear discussions

19 April 2025 11:20

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Rome on April 19 for the second round of indirect negotiations with the United States. The discussions focus on Iran's civilian nuclear program and the potential lifting of American sanctions.

Araghchi's visit follows the first round of talks held in Muscat, Oman, on April 12, which Iran described as calm and constructive. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei noted in a post on his X account that Iran is aware of the challenges ahead but is proceeding with "open eyes" and relying on past experiences, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

Baqaei emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through honest dialogue between nations, not through threats of force, hinting at the U.S.'s military threats if talks fail. He reiterated that Iran remains committed to diplomacy, having consistently shown good faith and responsibility in resolving issues in accordance with the country's national interests.

The second round of talks, which will be held indirectly through Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, is being co-chaired by Araghchi and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s special envoy to the Middle East. Baqaei confirmed that Rome was chosen as the venue for the talks based on a proposal from the Omani foreign minister, which was accepted by both Iran and the U.S. The necessary arrangements were coordinated by the Omani and Italian governments.

On the agenda, Baqaei reiterated Iran's stance that its nuclear program is peaceful and in full compliance with international obligations, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He stressed Iran's commitment to its responsibilities while asserting its legal rights. He also noted that Iran's position on lifting illegal sanctions and nuclear-related issues was clearly outlined during the first round of talks in Muscat.

Baqaei called for clarity from Washington, pointing out the contradictory remarks from U.S. officials and urging the U.S. to address concerns about its intentions. He warned that repeating past behaviours would not be productive, and for genuine progress, the U.S. must adopt a "realistic" and "constructive" approach.
