Armenia’s political shift could mirror Ukraine, Russian lawmaker warns
A Russian lawmaker has warned that Armenia could undergo a significant shift in its foreign policy direction depending on the outcome of its upcoming parliamentary elections, drawing comparisons with Ukraine’s geopolitical trajectory.
"Armenia may alter its foreign policy course and shift toward the West if Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wins the upcoming parliamentary elections," said Victor Vodolatsky, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, Lenta.ru reports.
Vodolatsky said Armenia’s foreign policy trajectory will depend on the outcome of the vote.
“If Pashinyan secures a majority, then, naturally, Armenia will choose a Western development path,” Vodolatsky stated.
He further warned that in such a scenario, Armenia could withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
“Armenia is repeating the path already taken by Ukraine and other countries that today have become appendages of Europe, serving its interests,” the MP said.
