Georgian PM condemns EU envoy’s remarks as “unthinkable”

23 April 2026 13:15

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has sharply criticized comments attributed to the European Union ambassador, describing them as unacceptable threats against the Georgian population.

Kobakhidze said it was “unthinkable” for an EU ambassador to warn the Georgian people of civil war and poverty, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

“It is difficult for me even to assess this statement. When the EU Ambassador threatens the Georgian people with civil war and impoverishment, it is simply unthinkable. It is impossible to assess this. I would like to emphasize once again that the Ambassador, unfortunately, is in a tragic situation when he has to make such threats against the Georgian people. This in itself reflects his difficult situation,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister further stated that the Ambassador’s remarks amount to a direct threat and that it would be appropriate to summon him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Several Georgian media outlets reported a statement made by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, at an event held at the European External Action Service in Brussels.

According to those reports, Herczynski stated that “Georgia is at a crossroads,” adding that the country’s future is not yet determined and that upcoming developments would show whether Georgia continues on the path of European democratic values or risks moving away from them.

He also noted: “We must not allow Georgia and the wonderful, warm, hospitable Georgian people to return to the dark times of violence, civil war, poverty, hardship, and corruption.”
