Ukraine arrests Belarusian spy in capital, citing threats to strategic sites
Ukrainian authorities have detained a man in Kyiv suspected of acting on behalf of Belarusian intelligence services, gathering and transmitting information about the capital’s strategic infrastructure, including thermal power plants and Ukrainian Armed Forces positions.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine said the suspect was monitoring the perimeter of energy facilities, conducting reconnaissance after shelling incidents, photographing military positions, and sending the data via Telegram channels and chatbots controlled by Belarusian intelligence.
According to investigators, he had planned to flee Ukraine if his mission was successfully completed and was preparing to cross the border illegally.
The authorities say the operation was foiled before any harm could be done. Security measures have been reinforced at potential target sites.
The man has been formally charged with treason under martial law. The offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment with confiscation of property. He remains in custody.
