Ukraine considers pressuring European nations for security guarantees Following Trump’s refusal
Several Ukrainian officials have said that Kyiv is exploring the possibility of urging European countries to provide a "net of guarantees" for its security.
Such a possibility occured after US President Donald Trump declined to include any security commitments for Ukraine in a deal granting access to the country’s mineral resources, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Ukraine’s primary objective is to establish a European presence within the country, with the aim of deploying a peacekeeping force supported by the US, to act as a deterrent against further Russian aggression.
While Washington has ruled out providing specific security guarantees for Ukraine, officials in Kyiv expect the US to support their efforts in persuading Europe and other international allies to step in.
In addition to traditional security guarantees, Ukrainian officials are seeking "soft guarantees" from foreign companies, particularly those from the US and prominent European nations. Kyiv hopes these companies will pressure their home governments to offer protection from potential Russian attacks, ensuring the safety of their investments in Ukraine.
With much of Ukraine’s mineral wealth located in Russian-occupied territories, Kyiv also views these resources as a potential bargaining chip in discussions with Western nations that have expressed interest in mining them. Ukraine is seeking to leverage its vast natural resources to secure international backing in the face of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
