US Army to unveil new missile defence strategy targeting 2040
The US Army is preparing to unveil a new missile defence strategy aimed at addressing complex threats expected by 2040.
Lt. Gen. Sean Gainey, commander of the Space and Missile Defence Command, confirmed this initiative, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Scheduled for release in October 2025, this strategy is a collaborative effort involving the Space and Missile Defence Center of Excellence, Army Futures Command, Army Air and Missile Defence Commands, and the Fires Center of Excellence.
Lt. Gen. Gainey emphasized that the new strategy will adopt an integrated approach, aligning with the Army's multidomain operations doctrine and warfighting concepts. This update builds on the strategic air and missile defence vision from 2018, which addressed needs up to 2028, focusing on force structure and organizational aspects.
The upcoming strategy will incorporate lessons from past and current conflicts, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East. Gainey noted that the evolving threat landscape necessitates a forward-looking strategy to ensure the Army's air and missile defence capabilities are effective in 2040.
Key elements of the new strategy will include continuous 360-degree coverage, an open architecture for missile defence technology, and the integration of artificial intelligence. Additionally, the strategy will prioritize capabilities that are fast, adaptable, and cost-effective.
