US B-52 bombers arrive in Middle East amid Iranian threat
The United States has deployed B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers to the Middle East, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a post on X late November 2.
The bombers arrived in CENTCOM's area of responsibility from the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, underscoring the US’s commitment to maintaining stability in the region amid escalating tensions, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, heavy bomber capable of performing a range of missions, including strategic attack, close-air support, and maritime operations. Known for its ability to carry nuclear or precision-guided conventional ordnance, the B-52 has a "worldwide precision navigation capability," the US Air Force stated. It can fly at high subsonic speeds, making it a versatile tool in both conventional and strategic military scenarios.
This deployment comes at a critical time, as Israel braces for a potential response from Iran following an Israeli strike last week on missile production facilities in Iran. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei issued a stern warning on social media, vowing a "crushing response" to the US and Israel for actions against Iran and its allies in the "Resistance Front."
On November 1, The Pentagon announced that, in addition to the B-52 bombers, the US would be deploying fighter jets, refuelling aircraft, ballistic missile defence destroyers, and Navy destroyers to the Middle East over the coming months. Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder emphasized that these measures are aimed at defending American personnel and interests in the region.
"Should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people," Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said in a statement.
