US, Denmark and Greenland hold talks to ease Trump row

29 January 2026 11:21

Talks between the United States, Greenland and Denmark began on January 28, the Danish foreign ministry said, as the three parties seek to resolve a diplomatic crisis over President Donald Trump's threats against the Arctic territory.

The diplomatic discussions come after months of tension between Denmark and the United States, both founding members of NATO, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Denmark's foreign ministry said in a written comment that senior officials from Denmark, Greenland and the United States had met to "discuss how we can address American concerns about security in the Arctic while respecting the Kingdom's red lines."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier on January 28 said that the United States now has in place a process regarding Greenland and that there will be technical-level meetings with officials from Greenland and Denmark on the issue.

Trump's repeated calls for U.S. control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russia and China, had threatened to fracture the transatlantic alliance before the dispute escalated.

The United States is weighing a more assertive role in Greenland, citing Russian and Chinese naval activity. President Donald Trump has argued that the US needs full control of the mineral-rich island for global security.

Experts and NATO officials, however, say the threat is minimal. Russian forces are focused on Ukraine, and Chinese activity is mostly scientific. US intelligence shows little military presence in the region.

The Royal United Services Institute notes that European NATO allies have the most capable Arctic forces, while US troops struggle with Arctic conditions and rely on European expertise. Officials warn that aggressive US moves could disrupt intelligence-sharing and weaken security. NATO continues to explore monitoring the Arctic through cooperative defence strategies without escalating tensions.
