US deploys strategic bombers to Romania for enhanced NATO integration
The United States has deployed two B-52 Stratofortress intercontinental strategic bombers to Romania's 57th air force base Mihail Kogălniceanu.
This deployment aims to strengthen NATO integration and enhance defence capabilities in Eastern Europe, Caliber.Az reports citing the message posted on the website of the US European Command.
The US B-52 bombers have been intercepted by two Russian aircraft over the Barents Sea while operating in international airspace and adhering to international law.
Despite the intercept, the US aircraft maintained their course and continued their planned mission without disruption.
The B-52s successfully completed their scheduled flight, which included integration exercises with NATO fighter jets before landing at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base.
Upon arrival at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, the B-52s were joined in formation by Romanian and Finnish fighter jets. During their deployment, the B-52s will operate as part of the 20th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron. They will collaborate with NATO allies and other international partners to enhance capabilities and fulfil security commitments across the US European Command's area of responsibility. Notably, this deployment marks the first instance of US strategic bombers operating out of Romania.
Gen. James Hecker, Commander of USAFE-AFAFRICA, emphasized the importance of maintaining a flexible and sustainable military posture capable of operating from long distances. “In today’s global environment, it is crucial that we are prepared to deliver a range of capabilities across significant distances,” Hecker stated. “This Bomber Task Force iteration provides an excellent opportunity to enhance our agile combat employment tactics, techniques, and procedures.”
Hecker highlighted that through collaborative efforts with NATO allies, the US strengthens its ability to address both current and future threats. The US regularly demonstrates its commitment to NATO through Bomber Task Force (BTF) missions, which support dynamic force employment across the European theatre. These missions offer strategic predictability and assurance to Allies while introducing operational unpredictability to potential adversaries.
“The US remains dedicated to working with our NATO Allies and partners along the Eastern Flank to ensure we have the combined skills and coordination necessary to maintain regional safety, security, and stability,” Hecker added.
