US plans to beef up security in Black Sea

02 April 2023 16:19

A bill called the "Black Sea Security Act of 2023" has been submitted to the US Senate to enhance US support for strengthening security in the Black Sea region.

Caliber.Az reports citing the US Congress' official website that according to the bill, the security of the Black Sea region is important for the national security interests of the US, as well as European and global security, especially against the background of Russia's war against Ukraine.

If passed, the bill would introduce an interagency strategy to increase US military assistance and cooperation with the EU and NATO, enhance economic ties and increase security assistance to the countries in the region 180 days after its passage. In particular, support would be increased for Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Georgia, and Bulgaria.

In addition, according to the strategy painted in the bill, senior US State Department officials must visit the Black Sea region at least twice a year. The Black Sea Security Strategy Act has now been referred to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
