Zelenskyy confirms Washington visit for talks with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed he will visit Washington on August 18 for a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
According to Caliber.Az, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to President Trump for the invitation, signalling the importance of the discussions.
“I intend to discuss all matters concerning the conclusion of the war with President Trump in Washington on Monday. Grateful for the invitation,” Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.
U.S. President Donald Trump described his August 15 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, as “10 out of 10,” signalling “very good progress” towards a potential peace deal in Ukraine, while emphasising “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
The leaders met at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson to explore ways to end the war, with Trump stating the goal was to “save a lot of lives” and expressing hope for a ceasefire.
He said discussions were warm and constructive, with many points agreed upon, though some key issues remain unresolved. Putin characterised the summit as conducted in an atmosphere of “mutual respect.”
Trump indicated the next steps would involve consultations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO leaders, and said he could attend a potential trilateral meeting. He also reiterated that the conflict would not have erupted under his presidency, blaming the outbreak on the Biden administration.
While Trump portrayed the talks as productive, neither side announced a concrete agreement. Putin claimed an “agreement” had been reached without specifics, urging Kyiv and European capitals to view the discussions constructively.
Analysts warn that the lack of clarity may raise concerns in Europe and Ukraine about their role in any emerging deal.
