Reuters: Trump seeks to avoid “forever war” with Iran
28 March 2026 21:24
US President Donald Trump told aides he wants to avoid a “forever war” with Iran and hopes to resolve the conflict through negotiations, Reuters reports, citing a senior White House official.
At the same time, Trump instructed his team to adhere to the publicly stated duration of military operations—four to six weeks. According to the White House source, this timeline is “shaky.” If negotiations fail, Trump has threatened military escalation against Iran.
Former US deputy national intelligence chief for the Middle East Jonathan Panikoff said the president has few options to end the conflict.
“Part of the challenge is the lack of clarity related to what a satisfactory outcome would be,” the expert explained.
