UN ready to support peace initiatives in Ukraine
The United Nations has expressed its readiness to back any significant efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine.
Stefan Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, told Russian media that António Guterres continues to call for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire as a first step towards a just, comprehensive, and sustainable resolution to the conflict.
“The Secretary-General once again urges an immediate, full, and unconditional cessation of hostilities as a crucial first step towards a fair, all-encompassing, and lasting peace in Ukraine, which fully respects the country’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, in line with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions,” Dujarric said.
He stressed that, the United Nations is ready to support all meaningful efforts in this regard.
On August 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump met at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska. The discussions lasted approximately three hours and included different formats: a one-on-one meeting in the American leader’s limousine en route to the main venue, followed by a small “three-on-three” session.
From the Russian side, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended, while the American delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy Stephen Whitcoff.
In a statement following the talks, President Putin indicated that resolving the conflict in Ukraine was the principal topic of the summit. He also called for a reset in bilateral relations, expressing a desire to return to cooperation and extending an invitation to President Trump to visit Moscow.
