Norway to open consulate general in Greenland
Norway is strengthening its diplomatic presence in the Arctic and will open a consulate general in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that the decision reflects the growing strategic importance of the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“The Northern region remains a strategic priority for Norway, and the Arctic is becoming increasingly important for international politics and security. The consulate general in Nuuk will strengthen political contacts and cooperation on shared interests,” he noted.
The new mission will be subordinate to the Norwegian Embassy in Copenhagen.
Since 1986, an honorary consulate has operated in Nuuk under a local representative, but it will now be replaced by a full consulate general headed by a professional diplomat.
