Pakistan cites religious observances for delay in US–Iran talks

19 June 2026 14:58

Pakistan has explained the delay in the planned US–Iran talks, as Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that the postponement of the start of negotiations in Switzerland was due to the involvement of Iranian officials in religious observances marking the month of Muharram.

Earlier, several media outlets reported alternative explanations for the delay, including suggestions that it may be linked to an escalation of tensions in Lebanon.

CNN, citing diplomatic sources, also reported that Tehran had demanded guarantees for an end to hostilities in Lebanon as a condition for resuming dialogue with Washington.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is a period during which Shiites observe mourning in remembrance of Imam Hussein. In Iran, this month is marked by large-scale religious and mourning ceremonies.
