Hungarian president limits prime ministerial terms
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has signed the 16th amendment to the country’s Fundamental Law, introducing a limit of two four-year terms for the office of prime minister
The amendment, which had previously been approved by the Hungarian parliament, is retroactive and would prevent former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from running for the office again, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The Presidential Office stated that the head of state’s review of constitutional amendments is limited to verifying procedural compliance. It said Sulyok concluded that the amendment met all required legal procedures and that there were no grounds for further constitutional review.
“Having established compliance with procedural requirements, the President signed the amendment to the Fundamental Law and ordered its publication in the Hungarian Gazette,” the statement from the Sándor Palace added, referring to the official state publication.
