US president “still committed” to acquiring Greenland, White House confirms
The White House has reaffirmed that President Donald Trump remains determined to make Greenland part of the United States, despite widespread opposition from Denmark and Greenland’s political leadership.
Speaking to reporters, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed questions about Trump’s stance on Greenland, which he previously expressed during his presidency, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“Trump maintains the reasoning for Greenland’s strategic purposes in the Arctic and he continues to remain committed to the idea of obtaining Greenland in whatever means we can to advance our national security interests in the region,” Leavitt said.
Since taking office, Trump has consistently argued that securing Greenland is crucial for US national security, particularly for strategic positioning in the Arctic region. His proposal to purchase the autonomous Danish territory drew international criticism, especially from Greenland's political leadership, which united earlier this year to firmly reject any such notion.
This rejection was underscored by a cold reception for Vice President JD Vance during his visit to Greenland earlier this year, a trip that was notably cut short after locals expressed their displeasure. Denmark, which governs Greenland in a loose political union, has also strongly rejected the idea of the US taking control of the territory.
Trump’s ongoing push for Greenland remains a point of contention on the global stage, with both Greenland and Denmark asserting their sovereignty over the region. Despite this, the president continues to emphasize the strategic importance of Greenland to US interests.
