US president threatens BRICS with sky-high tariffs over dollar talks
US President Donald Trump has warned BRICS member states that they would face a hefty 150 per cent tariff if they mentioned the destruction of the dollar.
Trump made these remarks during a meeting with Republican governors, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He discussed the potential creation of a new currency by the BRICS member states, which could involve the use of the Chinese yuan. Trump also stated that his first response had been that any BRICS member state that even mentioned the destruction of the dollar would face a 150 per cent tariff, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated by the US.
Trump also remarked that the US no longer needed goods from BRICS member states, expressing uncertainty about the situation. He added that they hadn’t heard anything from the BRICS member states lately. Furthermore, he suggested that imposing tariffs could eventually lead to the elimination of income tax in the US, stating that it might be possible to completely eliminate income tax and that perhaps the country wouldn’t even need an income tax system once everything worked out.
Previously, Trump had threatened that BRICS member states would face 100 per cent tariffs if they established their own currency and ceased using the US dollar in trade. His remarks underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding the role of the US dollar in global commerce and the potential consequences for countries moving away from it.
