Official updates on damages post-quake in Russia’s Kamchatka region
Half of the residential buildings in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky were damaged during a strong earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka Krai, though the region’s governor, Vladimir Solodov, told President Vladimir Putin that the load-bearing structures of the buildings remained intact.
Solodov noted that, overall, the buildings suffered significant damage, and a thorough inspection of the affected areas is currently underway. He said that approximately 1,400 buildings had sustained various types of damage, representing about half of the city’s residential stock, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
On September 4, Solodov estimated that restoring the region’s infrastructure would cost between 6 and 7 billion rubles ($73- $86 million).
The earthquake struck Kamchatka on July 30, prompting a tsunami threat along the coast of Avacha Bay. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the wall of one kindergarten collapsed, and a series of aftershocks followed the main tremor.
