US strike halts Iran’s rail link to Mashhad ahead of Khamenei burial
Passenger train services between Tehran and Mashhad, where former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is due to be buried on July 9, have been suspended following overnight US strikes, according to Tasnim.
The agency reported that repair crews were dispatched to the scene and have begun restoring the damaged railway infrastructure. Authorities have also introduced an alternative travel route for passengers, involving road transport around the affected section of track.
The United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon. On July 8, however, Iran and the United States exchanged a new round of strikes.
Ali Khamenei is scheduled to be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, Iran.
