US, Türkiye forge key agreement on Syria Secretary of State optimistic about Gaza ceasefire
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that the United States and Türkiye have reached a broad agreement on addressing the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Speaking after a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Blinken emphasized a shared vision for Syria’s future, centered on the establishment of an inclusive, secular government, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
This new Syrian leadership, according to Blinken, must avoid alliances with extremist factions and ensure regional stability. Moreover, the Secretary of State expressed hope that such a government would work towards safeguarding the rights of women, as well as ethnic and religious minorities, while also agreeing to permit the investigation and destruction of any chemical weapons found within the country.
This diplomatic agreement underscores a broader push for stability in the Middle East, with the United States and Türkiye aligning on key issues. However, as the region remains volatile, Blinken also expressed cautious optimism about the prospects for peace in another critical area: Gaza.
Following his remarks on Syria, Blinken turned to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, noting encouraging signs for a potential ceasefire in Gaza. He indicated that recent developments over the past few weeks have created the conditions for both sides to reach a temporary halt to hostilities.
