Venezuela’s Maduro hopes Trump to halt conflicts in Ukraine, Middle East
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his election victory as President of the United States, expressing hope that Trump would put an end to ongoing conflicts.
“I hope that Trump will put an end to wars,” President Maduro remarked, referencing Trump’s campaign statements, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He emphasised the shared values between the Venezuelan and American people, stating: “Venezuela has its own identity and history, and it shares these values with the people of the United States, one of which is that we say ‘no’ to war.”
Maduro pointed out that during his campaign, Trump pledged to focus on the domestic development of the United States and to halt conflicts in Ukraine and the Palestinian territories. He noted that Trump now had a “golden opportunity to achieve peace and change the previous dynamics with Latin American and Caribbean countries.”
The Venezuelan leader voiced hope for improved relations between the two governments, acknowledging that “not everything was positive” during Trump’s first administration.
“This is a new beginning… Venezuela is open to cooperation with any country that respects our identity,” he said. “We must start our relationship on a ‘win-win’ basis to ensure the course of human history is different,” Maduro emphasised.
Venezuela has no formal diplomatic relations with the United States, having severed ties on 23 January 2019 after the US administration recognised Juan Guaidó as the interim president of the country. Since then, the US and its allies have imposed more than 930 unilateral sanctions on Venezuela.
