Ukraine secures $1.5 billion in defence aid through NATO’s PURL mechanism — Zelenskyy
Ukraine has secured $1.5 billion in defence funding through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which will be allocated for weapons procurement, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on August 14.
“Our new PURL defence support initiative, implemented jointly with our partners, is already delivering tangible results. As of today, we have already secured $1.5 billion,” Zelenskyy said in a post on Telegram, Caliber.Az reports.
The NATO-backed PURL mechanism enables Alliance members to jointly purchase US-made weapons for Ukraine, which Zelenskyy described as a tool that “truly strengthens Ukraine’s defence.”
According to the president, the Netherlands has contributed $500 million, a joint pledge from Denmark, Norway and Sweden has also totalled $500 million, and Germany added another $500 million on Wednesday.
“This is a truly significant reinforcement, and I am grateful to Germany for this important step,” Zelenskyy said, adding that discussions with other countries on further contributions are continuing.
He stressed that each PURL contribution represents “a direct investment in Ukraine’s ability to protect the lives of our people and bring a just peace closer.”
