Musk: Fully autonomous cars to expand across US this year
18 May 2026 13:50
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on May 18 that he expects self-driving cars without human drivers to become more widespread in the United States later this year.
Speaking via video link to the Smart Mobility Summit in Tel Aviv, Musk said autonomous vehicles were already operating in three cities in Texas without safety monitors and that the rollout would expand nationwide in 2026, Reuters reports.
"Five years from now and certainly 10 years from now ... probably 90% of all distance driven will be driven by the AI in a self-driving car," he said. "So overwhelmingly, it'll be quite a niche thing in 10 years to actually be driving your own car."
