WSJ: Trump eyes White House helipad plan amid broader renovation
U.S. President Donald Trump is discussing plans to install a helipad at the White House to prevent new Marine One helicopters from damaging the South Lawn, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.
The proposed helipad would become the latest addition to a broader series of renovations and redesign projects on the historic White House grounds since Trump began his second term.
Trump is concerned that the heavier U.S. Marine Corps helicopters are causing damage to the lawn during landings and takeoffs. The president is said to be personally involved in discussions surrounding the project.
For decades, U.S. presidents traveled aboard VH-3D Sea King helicopters, but those aircraft were replaced in 2024 by the newer VH-92A Patriot helicopters. According to The Wall Street Journal, the updated helicopters are significantly heavier, and their exhaust emissions have also contributed to turf damage on the South Lawn.
The White House did not respond to media inquiries regarding the possible construction of a helipad.
The report also stated that a helipad is expected to be installed this summer at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort by the president to reshape the White House complex, including renovations to the Rose Garden, refurbishment of the Oval Office interior, replacement of pathway paving, installation of new flagpoles, and construction of a ballroom on the site of the former East Wing.
