Von der Leyen: EU to double financial support for Greenland
The European Union (EU) plans to double its financial support for Greenland, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen announced on X.
In her letter to the Premier of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen von der Leyen said that, Europe and Greenland will always be each other’s trusted and reliable partners.
"We want to deepen our cooperation. That’s why we aim to double our financial support to Greenland. So we can deliver clean energy and create the technologies of the future,” she wrote.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, holds vast reserves of critical minerals like rare earths essential for the EU's green transition, amid melting Arctic ice opening new shipping routes and resource access.
EU-Greenland ties strengthened in March 2024 when Ursula von der Leyen visited Nuuk, opening an EU office and signing €94 million in "Global Gateway" deals for renewables, education, and biodiversity.
This followed U.S. President Trump's March 2025 remarks eyeing control of the island, prompting von der Leyen to affirm EU support for Greenland's sovereignty
