Yum Brands hit with ransomware attack
Yum Brands Inc. on January 19 said a ransomware attack on some of its information-technology systems prompted the temporary closure of some of its UK restaurants.
The Louisville, Ky., parent of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell said that while data was taken from its network, there is no evidence that customer databases were stolen, Market Watch reports.
Yum said it has initiated response protocols upon detection of the breach, including deploying containment measures such as taking certain systems offline.
The company said that fewer than 300 restaurants in the UK were closed for a day, but all stores are now operational.
Yum said it has launched an investigation into the incident, and that it has notified federal law enforcement, adding that it expects to fully restore the affected systems, in the coming days.
Yum said it doesn't expect the attack to have a material adverse impact on its business, operations or financial results.
Global cyberattacks rose 38 per cent in 2022, according to a recent report from cyber-threat intelligence provider Check Point Research, which said the increase was driven by smaller, more agile hacker and ransomware gangs.
