Azerbaijan detains 10 Sri Lanka citizens trying to cross to Iran

    SOCIETY  16 August 2022 - 17:24

Azerbaijan has detained 10 Sri Lanka citizens on charges of violating the country's state border.

The incident was registered near a border post close to Fuzuli District's Boyuk Bahmanli village at 22:00 on August 12, Report informs citing the service's press centre.

The post is controlled by the Horadiz border detachment of the Azerbaijani State Border Service.

During the preliminary investigation, it was established that on July 25 and 29, the foreigners arrived in Azerbaijan as tourists in order to travel to a European country later, accompanied by an Iranian citizen named Alireza. To do this, they wanted to illegally cross Azerbaijan's state border and move to Iran, and from there to Türkiye.

Operational and investigative measures are ongoing to identify and eliminate the source of illegal migration.
