Minister: No plans to close Russian-language schools in Azerbaijan

10 July 2025 12:08

Azerbaijan’s Science and Education Minister Emin Amrullayev has stated that the issue of closing Russian-language schools in the country is not currently on the government’s agenda.

Speaking at the “Certification 2025: Professional Teacher – Quality Education” event held at ADA University on July 10, the minister emphasised that the primary goal is to ensure students achieve strong proficiency in the Azerbaijani language alongside foreign languages, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Amrullayev also noted challenges in the training of teachers for the Russian-language departments. He pointed out that recruitment exam results indicate a significant gap in performance between the two sectors, with candidates applying for Azerbaijani-language positions scoring over 80 points on average, while those in the Russian-language sector typically achieve scores between 50 and 60.

Due to this disparity, the ministry is often forced to consider applicants with lower scores when hiring for Russian-language departments.
