NATO members promise Ukraine support to join alliance through declaration
WORLD 27 November 2022 - 09:57
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a joint declaration on November 26 in support of Ukraine’s move toward EU and NATO membership.
"This document certifies Belgium’s support for our movement towards full membership in the European Union and NATO," Zelenskyy said, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Belgium was the second country to sign such a declaration, with the Czech Republic having been the first to do so on October 31 during the Czech prime minister’s visit to Kyiv.
Ukraine is expected to sign declarations with several NATO members on it joining the alliance.
As RBC-Ukraine reported, the Adviser to Vladimir Zelenskyy on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Deputy to the Head of the President’s Office, Igor Zhovkva, disclosed these plans.
"We are planning the signing of further similar declarations with the heads of NATO states", Zhovkva said after Belgium signed the declaration, announcing their readiness of providing practical assistance for Kyiv to progress in the implementation process of EU and NATO standards.
"This is a very important international and political sign in regards to Ukraine reaching progress in the perspective of European integration, seeing as our country is successfully progressing in the implementation of 7 recommendations by the European Commission, required for joining the EU. The NATO standards and the interoperability we are successfully seizing on the battlefield. The voice of Belgium is playing a crucial role", the presidential aide noted.
