Sweden delivers 10 Stridsvagn 122 tanks to Ukraine

Sweden has delivered 10 Strv 122 tanks to Ukraine this year and trained the crews.

The combat vehicles are already on the battlefield, RBC-Ukraine reports quoting the head of the Operational Department of the Swedish army staff Mats Ludwig.

"We gave them everything we could, good material and good knowledge. Now we wish them all the best in liberating their country," the statement reads.

It is noted that for just over 30 years, these tanks formed the backbone of Swedish mechanised brigades. Now the Ukrainian army has ten of these tanks at its disposal to fight for the liberation of their country with tankers trained by the Swedish army.

What is known about Stridsvagn 122 tanks

Stridsvagn 122 is the main battle tank of the Swedish army, created under license as a version of the German Leopard 2A5. However, it has a number of upgrades, including additional armor and improvements to meet the requirements of the Swedish military. The armament of the Leopard 2A5 is a powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing a variety of ammunition, including high-explosive and armor-piercing. The Strv 122 retained this firepower while receiving significant armor protection upgrades and additional modular armor.

The Stridsvagn 122 also has a reinforced undercarriage, the front of the tank is equipped with additional armour modules, and the roof is protected against attacks from above. The tank is fitted with the French GALAX smoke grenade launcher system, which allows the firing of high-explosive and special ammunition.
