Sweden pledges $157 million to boost Ukraine’s military arsenal
Sweden is set to provide SEK 1.5 billion (approximately $157 million) to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities, including supplies of barrels for the Archer self-propelled artillery system (SAU) and additional support, Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson announced.
“The government has decided to allocate 1.5 billion SEK from support packages 18 and 19 to bolster new military capabilities for Ukraine. This includes more than 10 new Archer artillery barrels, long-range strike and underwater systems, as well as more logistical assistance,” Jonson said on X.
He emphasised that the Archer system has proven its effectiveness in Ukraine, creating a need for additional artillery barrels.
Since the outbreak of the full-scale invasion, Sweden has shifted from its traditional neutrality to firmly backing Ukraine. The country has actively participated in the broader European effort by offering both political support and material aid, particularly in defence.
Beyond military aid, Sweden supports Ukraine through humanitarian initiatives, reconstruction projects, refugee assistance, and pushing for accountability for Russia.
The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) has allocated UAH 590 million (around $16 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s cybersecurity.
Earlier in June, Sweden committed €50 million to the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) and the NATO Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP), which focus on training and supporting Ukrainian troops.
Additionally, Sweden joined the electronic warfare coalition and accepted a co-chair role at Germany’s invitation.
