South Korean Parliament confirms Kim Min-seok as new prime minister
South Korea’s National Assembly on July 3 approved the nomination of Kim Min-seok as prime minister, clearing the way for President Lee Jae Myung to form a new cabinet following his election victory on June 3.
Kim, a veteran lawmaker and longtime political ally of President Lee, secured parliamentary backing despite opposition resistance, which reflects ongoing divisions within the legislature, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
His appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as the country faces mounting economic pressures and regional tensions. Kim has pledged to prioritize economic recovery, with a focus on tackling income inequality and boosting job creation—key elements of President Lee’s campaign platform.
Kim gained national attention last year after publicly warning in August that then-President Yoon Suk Yeol might declare martial law. His prediction came three months before Yoon’s short-lived decree to impose military rule, which ultimately led to Yoon’s ouster in April.
Analysts expect Prime Minister Kim to also take a leading role in shaping South Korea’s diplomatic approach, particularly in efforts to improve stability on the Korean Peninsula.
He is expected to address the nation in the coming days to outline his policy agenda.
