Lithuania backs troop deployment to Ukraine, calls for no concessions to Russia

14 August 2025 16:41

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called on the countries of the so-called "coalition of the willing" to be prepared to deploy forces to Ukraine, as part of broader efforts to ensure security and deter further Russian aggression.

His remarks came during a high-level meeting involving 31 nations supporting Ukraine, convened in advance of the anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Caliber.Az reports, citing Lithuanian media.

“We need to be prepared to deploy forces to ensure security in Ukraine,” Nausėda stated in a press release issued by the Lithuanian presidential office.

The Lithuanian leader emphasized that his country is ready to contribute both troops and military training capabilities to a joint force, should such a deployment be required. Nausėda framed the appeal within the context of ongoing threats to European security posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, now entering its fourth year.

“Russia’s fourth year of war against Ukraine has a significant impact on the security of Europe as a whole,” he said.

While acknowledging the importance of diplomatic efforts to end the war, Nausėda warned against any settlement that could compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. “Efforts to end the war are welcome, but they have to be based on terms favourable to Ukraine and Europe,” he stressed.

The Lithuanian president also issued a strong reminder that peace in Ukraine cannot be negotiated without Ukrainian participation, insisting on the inclusion of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in future international discussions. “Peace in Ukraine should not be decided without Ukraine,” he said, underscoring the importance of Kyiv’s direct involvement in any future negotiations.

Moreover, Nausėda made clear that Ukraine should not be pressured into territorial concessions. “Kyiv must not be forced to give up territories,” he said.

“A comprehensive ceasefire without preconditions is essential before any real negotiations can begin,” Nausėda added, highlighting the need for a stable security environment as a prerequisite for dialogue.

The Trump-Putin summit is scheduled to take place in Alaska on August 15, drawing intense international attention amid mounting concerns over the direction of the Ukraine conflict and its broader geopolitical implications.
