French soldiers caught up in racism scandal Another blow to Paris’s image

27 August 2026 12:16

France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces has launched disciplinary proceedings against ten servicemen following a highly controversial scandal on social media.

As reported by Caliber.Az, citing the Kenyan website Streamline Feed, the crisis erupted after Mediapart published photographs showing French soldiers proudly posing with the green-and-white flag of Rhodesia — an unrecognised former colonial state that has become a global symbol of white supremacist ideology.

In a statement to the press, the French ministry confirmed the identities of the soldiers and warned that they could face “severe disciplinary sanctions.” The controversy stems from two separate photographs that were widely circulated on Instagram. The Ministry of the Armed Forces was quick to clarify that the two images were unrelated.

The first photograph shows a group of six soldiers serving with the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment. They brazenly posed with the Rhodesian flag inside their barracks in the city of Nîmes, violating basic rules prohibiting unauthorised political demonstrations on military premises.

The second image poses an even greater challenge to France’s diplomatic standing. It shows four uniformed soldiers displaying the same flag during an official training deployment in the UAE. The soldiers proudly raised the symbol of white supremacist ideology while standing directly in front of a Leclerc main battle tank.

Rhodesia, which included the territory of present-day Zimbabwe, existed from 1965 to 1979 as an unrecognised regime that pursued a brutal policy of racial segregation. Today, its flag is revered in white supremacist circles as a symbol of an idealised racial hierarchy. One of the most notorious examples is Dylann Roof, the terrorist who murdered nine African American worshippers at a church in Charleston in 2015 and wore a jacket decorated with the Rhodesian flag. By associating themselves with this particular symbol, the French soldiers crossed a red line between military indiscipline and ideological extremism.

For the African continent, the incident provides a political weapon. Across the Sahel, anti-French sentiment has been fueled in large part by accusations that France continues to pursue a neocolonial policy. Photographs of French soldiers celebrating an African regime associated with apartheid-style racial rule reinforce the worst suspicions of anti-Western critics.

France’s military leadership is now conducting a major public-relations campaign to protect its image on the global stage. Failure to take disciplinary action against the ten soldiers would not only undermine public confidence in the armed forces but could also cause irreparable damage to France’s remaining strategic credibility.
