Putin describes US efforts on Ukraine as “energetic and sincere” ahead of Alaska summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the United States’ actions to end the conflict in Ukraine as “energetic and sincere,” ahead of a planned summit between the two nations in Alaska.
Speaking at a Kremlin meeting on August 14, to prepare for the upcoming talks, Putin said the current U.S. administration was making substantial efforts to halt hostilities and reach agreements beneficial to all parties involved, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“I asked you to gather today to provide an update on where we stand with the current American administration, which, as is well known, is undertaking, in my view, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the fighting, resolve the crisis, and reach agreements that serve the interests of all parties involved in this conflict,” Putin told officials.
He added that these efforts aimed to create long-term conditions for peace, not only between Russia and the United States, but also across Europe and globally.
Trump has warned of “very severe consequences” should Russian President Vladimir Putin refuse to end the war in Ukraine, ahead of their summit in Alaska.
Trump’s remarks came after a virtual meeting with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged that Kyiv not be sidelined in any peace deal.
Trump did not specify the consequences but said he would propose a three-way meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy if the summit on August 15 goes well.
He added that a follow-up meeting would depend on whether he receives satisfactory answers from Putin.
