Borrell: “Difficult battle” awaiting Ukraine on its way to joining EU

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the European Union supports Ukraine “on two fronts”: in the conflict against Russia and in joining the EU.

He called on Kyiv to “force Ukrainian society” to work towards becoming a member of the union, according to Kommersant.

“We support Ukraine on two fronts: in the war and in becoming a member of the EU. The first is a terrible fight, the second is a difficult fight. Not terrible, since people are not dying, but it will still be difficult, and you must do everything to make Ukrainian society work for this,” Borrell said speaking in Kyiv.

The head of European diplomacy believes that Ukraine’s accession to the EU will not happen “neither tomorrow nor the day after tomorrow,” but Brussels wants it to happen “sooner, not later.” Mr. Borrell considers Ukraine's membership in the EU “the best guarantee of security.”
