Azerbaijan thwarts another attempt to smuggle drugs from Iran PHOTO

The Azerbaijani State Border Service has prevented the smuggling of a total weight of 18.8 kg of drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan in the "Goytepe" border detachment.

On November 29 at 17:20 near Arus village of Yardimli district, Azerbaijani border guards found and seized 10.5 kg of marijuana, 3.75 kg of methamphetamine, and 4.55 kg of heroin in the service territory of the border outpost of the border detachment "Goytepe" of the State Border Service, Caliber.Az reports.

Operative-investigative measures continue on the fact.

Drug smuggling from Iran's territory has increased in recent months. Azerbaijan has faced numerous drug trafficking attempts, all of which have been foiled.

After liberating its lands from Armenia's occupation in a 44-day war with Armenia in 2020, Azerbaijan restored control over the 132 km section of the Azerbaijan-Iran border.

Drugs are traditionally smuggled from Afghanistan into Iran and from there into Azerbaijan. Taking into account the geographical location of Azerbaijan, drug traffickers try to smuggle drugs into European countries along the Balkan route by transit through the country.
