Germany intends to create cyber troops

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced reforms to strengthen the Bundeswehr, in particular command reform and the creation of cyber troops.

“The level of threats in Europe has increased. This has led us to face new challenges. Therefore, the Bundeswehr will have to be reformed and brought into optimal condition, especially in case of defensive actions,” the minister said, Spiegel reports. 

In particular, a unified operational central command will be created, which will combine the functions of its two predecessors - the command of foreign troops and the command of troops on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In addition, along with ground, air and sea forces, Germany will create troops for operations in cyberspace and information operations. In particular, they will have to be used for electronic warfare, cyber operations, reconnaissance and protection of information infrastructure.

Pistorius noted that the Bundeswehr will need an additional 6.5 billion euros in the 2025 budget. At the same time, he did not mention whether the authorities intend to return compulsory military service to Germany.

Germany's defence spending in 2024 should amount to approximately 52 billion euros.
