Lithuania, Poland conducting military exercises
The Lithuanian and Polish servicemen along with the NATO allies are conducting exercises in the area of the so-called Suwalki corridor.
“The participants are tasked with planning and directing defensive military operations in interaction with the military units of NATO allies,” TASS reports citing the command of the Lithuanian army.
Some 1,500 military personnel from the Samogitia Motorized Infantry Brigade and allied units are involved, as well as about 200 units of military equipment are used in the exercises.
Besides the Polish military units, the US and Portuguese military personnel are participating in the training. The exercises will last until April 26.
The Suwalki corridor is a strategically important section of the Lithuanian-Polish border stretching about 64 kilometres, adjacent to the Kaliningrad region of Russia and the Grodno region of Belarus. In case of its possible closure, Lithuania will be isolated onshore from its Western NATO partners.
