EU's Borrell urges choice: Rule of law or support for Israel
WORLD 25 May 2024 - 17:18
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, emphasized the critical choice facing the European Union: whether to uphold international institutions grounded in the rule of law or to support Israel.
Borrel made these remarks during discussions at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
Regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Borrell stressed the necessity of a political resolution, highlighting the futility of a military approach. He urged for dialogue with Arab nations and emphasized the pivotal role of European leadership in initiating the political process. Borrel expressed optimism for progress during upcoming discussions in Brussels.
Borrell acknowledged the divisive nature of the Gaza situation within Europe, citing differing votes in the UN as evidence. Additionally, he pointed to a recent ruling by the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) demanding Israel cease all military actions in Rafah immediately.
He said, "Consider the recent ruling from the International Court of Justice. How will the EU respond? What stance will we take? We face a decision: uphold our commitment to international institutions governed by the rule of law or maintain our support for Israel."
