Media: US tries to prevent IAEA from adopting resolution condemning Iran

    WORLD  27 May 2024 - 18:31

The US administration is pressuring France and Britain to submit a resolution to the IAEA condemning Iran's nuclear programme.

Washington fears that such a resolution would increase tensions between Iran and the United States on the eve of the presidential election, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In case such a resolution is nevertheless presented, the US representative intends to abstain

The administration believes that since the death of President Ibrahim Raisi, Iran's political course has become more unstable. The administration has previously stated that it seeks to resolve the issue of Iranian nuclear developments through diplomacy.

WSJ states: If the U.S. abstains from bringing the resolution to a vote, it would be a serious blow to the credibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency. International efforts to contain Iran would be significantly damaged.
