Ukraine conflict resolution key to restoring Georgia's ties with EU, US
PM Kobakhidze says
WORLD 21 June 2024 - 10:06
The conclusion of hostilities in Ukraine is expected to significantly enhance Georgia's diplomatic relations with both the European Union and the United States, stated Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
During his address to Georgian journalists in Berlin, Kobakhidze expressed optimism about the potential for improved relations, TASS reports.
"I am confident that as the regional and global situation stabilizes, it will have a direct positive impact on Georgia's relations with the European Union and the United States. We sincerely hope for a swift end to the war in Ukraine, as peace is crucial for Ukraine. The cessation of conflict will undoubtedly be a key factor contributing to the enhancement of our country's relations with the EU and the US," Kobakhidze articulated.
Kobakhidze elaborated on the current state of diplomatic relations, noting a marked deterioration during the tenure of US Ambassador Kelly Degnan and EU Ambassador Karl Hartzel. He underscored the necessity for a "reset and recovery" in these relationships, pointing out that Georgia is ready to engage in comprehensive consultations on all pertinent issues.
"Relations between Tbilisi and the West have suffered significantly, and this period of strained ties requires substantial efforts to mend. The main focus should be on seeing reciprocal actions from our Western partners," Kobakhidze emphasized. He highlighted the importance of mutual efforts in rebuilding trust and cooperation, indicating that Georgia is prepared to discuss and address any topics to restore and strengthen these critical international relationships.
