Hungary refuses to block Ukraine's EU accession

25 June 2024 14:36

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Simultaneously, he promised not to interfere with the country's accession to the European bloc, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

"Hungary does not agree with this process, but we do not block it and support the start of negotiations," the prime minister said. Hungary will hold the presidency of the EU Council from July 1.

Viktor Orban believes that the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU are a "purely politically motivated process". In his opinion, the EU needs to first study the potential consequences of admitting a country in a state of war, with unclear borders, to the bloc. Earlier, Viktor Orban suggested postponing the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU for 5-10 years.

Negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU will start on June 25, with the first Ukraine-EU intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. Also today, the EU Council is to approve the text of the security agreement between Ukraine and the bloc. After that, the European Commission will start analyzing Ukrainian legislation.
