6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Peru, residents injured
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Peru, startling residents and prompting some to leave their homes as tremors were felt across the region.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred approximately 20 miles west of Chimbote. The epicenter’s depth and the intensity of the tremors triggered concern but, according to early reports, there were no major injuries or severe damage to infrastructure, and no tsunami warnings were issued, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
According to Peru’s Ministry of Health, “Of the 25 injured, 12 remain hospitalized while 13 have been discharged,” highlighting that the quake did result in some casualties.
Peru lies along the geologically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of South America’s most earthquake-prone countries. Earthquakes of moderate to high magnitude are common, often causing significant disruptions and raising questions about the resilience of local infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and public safety.
