African Union calls for formation of international group for peace in Sudan
The African Union (AU) welcomes the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United States aimed at a ceasefire in Sudan, where armed clashes between the army and rapid reaction forces have continued since mid-April.
According to TASS, this was stated in the Saudi city of Jeddah by the chairman of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, speaking at the opening of the 32nd summit of the Arab League (LAS).
“We applaud the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United States to bring about a ceasefire in Sudan. We call for the formation of an international group to achieve peace and stability in Sudan,” he stressed.
In his opinion, "the adventure of violence in Sudan threatens the entire region with fragmentation." At the same time, Mahamat expressed confidence that "the solution to the crisis in Sudan will not be military."
Earlier on May 19, at the summit in Jeddah, the chairmanship of the Arab League Council was transferred from Algeria to Saudi Arabia.
